Early Reading First in Oklahoma
Early Reading First, a No Child Left Behind research program, strives to:
Prepare young children for successful entry into kindergarten by providing federal funding to local early education programs serving low-income families, enhance young children's language and cognitive development through high-quality instruction, provide continuous professional development based on scientific research, and to create centers of educational excellence.
What is Starting Right?
Starting Right, an Early Reading First program, targets selected child care centers and Head Start sites in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Coyle, and Langston. Each facility serves predominately low-income families. Starting right utilizes early childhood best practices and educational theories based on scientific research to benefit teachers, parents, and children involved. Intensive professional development for teachers, support for family involvement in literacy, and bridge-building between families, child care, Head Start, and public schools are the key components of the project.
