BM30 The CARES Model: Building Social Skills and Reducing Problem Behaviors in Early Childhood Classrooms
The impact of stress is readily apparent in the behavior of young children. Teachers report that
children are coming to school worried about violence, acting angry or aggressive, or lacking the
social skills to get along with others and be ready to learn. Many children have emotional and
behavioral problems serious enough to disrupt classrooms and distress teachers. Used in hundreds of
early childhood classrooms, the CARES Model provides a wealth of proven strategies to reduce
problem behaviors while promoting prosocial skills. In the CARES Model, one key strategy used to
teach social competence to young children is the use of class meetings. Through class meetings,
children gain a better understanding of their own feelings and behavior and develop a heightened
sensitivity toward the feelings and perspectives of others.
