SN9 Mainstreaming in Child Care Settings
Integrating children with disabilities into child care settings with children without disabilities is the focus of this program. One of the topics discussed include how the caregiver can successfully care for young children with different disabilities in order for them to develop and learn in the environment in his or her own unique way. This film examines the role of the caregivers in helping children learn by supporting their play. Some feel, when caring for children with disabilities, they have to be an expert in the field or have separate teaching times for the children. SN26 Early Childhood Intervention in Medical Practices: How Physicians and Health Care Professionals Can Make a Difference
This videotape notes the importance of early identification for children with disabilities and how early contact with physicians can enhance a child's and a family's development. Physicians and therapists describe the importance of early and efficient referrals for early intervention services, even if a delay is only suspected and not yet diagnosed. One caution: this tape includes a strong emphasis on physicians taking action on behalf of families. It will be helpful in showing this video to emphasize strategies that are more "empowering". SN27 Making a Difference Together: A Guide to Early Intervention in New Mexico
This video provides a great example of how families can benefit from early intervention services. Following the stories of culturally diverse families, the video takes you step-by-step through the process of entry into, services from and transition to the early intervention system. The role of the service coordinator is described, along with the roles of other providers who may work with the child and family. Evaluation for eligibility is discussed, including the five development domains that are assessed (cognitive, communication, self-help skills, motor, and social-emotional development). While the examples are New Mexico-specific, the ideas are more broadly applicable. English and Spanish versions are included on the same tape. SN37 Just Being Kids
This video looks at the lives of six different children and their families. Each of the six stories is a vignette unto itself with its own unique issues and discussion points on the general topic of services provided in everyday routines, activities, and places--- "natural environments." It is well recognized that supports and services for infants and toddlers with special needs are best provided in the context these natural environments. This film was developed for use in both pre-service and in-service training programs with therapists, early childhood specialists, and service coordinators. When four Hispanic immigrant families find themselves with young children with disabilities, what experiences, stories, and points of view do they have in common and how do they differ? To what extent does a given cultural and linguistic background inform individuality, uniqueness, and surprisingly different experiences of having a child with a disability? This video presents four families who were involved in a research study by the University of Colorado, Boulder, Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. SN41 Autism and the New Law: Resources for Treatment, Hope for a Cure
This video, hosted by Anthony Edwards, is designed to help parents, educators and health care professionals better understand autism or similar diagnosis such as Pervasively Developmentally Delayed (PDD) and Asperger's Syndrome. The video describes components of The Advancement of Pediatric Autism Research Act, a subtitle of the Children's Health Act of 2000. This law was passed to find more effective treatments and even a cure for autism. The law also provides for more awareness and better resources for families who have children with autism.
